What Owls Do

Some owls make a lot of noise.  Not all owls stay in the same place the whole year.  Owls sleep A LOT during the day.  An owl can turn its head around to look the other way.  Owls try to stay out of sight during the day.  Owls have incredible night vision and keen hearing. Owls call in late winter and early spring, which is their mating season.

What Owls Look Like

The Eared and Horned Owls are named for feathers that stick up on their head.  OwlÕs eyes donÕt move, so instead they turn their head. Young Owls donÕt look like adults. All owls have huge or tiny big round heads. Owls have two toes forward and two backward.

What & How Owls Eat

On the darkest nights owls can find their prey by only sound. An owl uses its beak to peck apart large prey.  The Horned Owl is a fierce hunter.  Barn Owls stun their food and then grab it with their talons. When hunting owls look for any movement in the night.  They listen to sound high and low. An owl is a crowÕs worst enemy.  Night-hunting owls pounce on crows. Some owls hunt day and night.  Owls are birds of prey, which means they hunt, kill and eat. Tiny animals bones and fur (from eating rodents) are coughed up as a ball, known as a pellet.  Larger owls eat weasels, rabbits, snakes, and 209 other birds, including smaller owls.
