Chapter 1

 

 

Where Owls Live

 

 

    The snowy owl mainly lives in the Artic.  An owl searches for an empty nest, for its nest.  Some owls have to live in the tops of trees. Some owls live in the old stumps of trees.  Some owls live under peopleÕs houses.  Some owls live in big forests.  Some owls live in trees five feet long.  Some owls live in the highest forests.  Some owls live in holes under ground.  Some owls live in trees that they are camouflaged in.  Some owls live in zoos, too.  Owls build their nests they use in trees.  Lots of owls live in the tops of trees.  Some owls live in the same place all year long.  Some barn owls have to make their nests in boxes.  The Tengmalms owl lives in the Artic area.

What Owls Eat

 

Some owls can swallow lizards hole.  Owls eat voles-tiny tipes of mice.  Some owls eat sap from trees.  Some owls eat grass, too.  Owls eat fish, voles, and mice.  Some owls eat snakes.  Some owls eat butterflies.  Some owls eat different types of grass.  Some snowy owls eat seals.  Some owls are forced to eat twigs.  Some snowy owls eat pigeons, too.  Some owls are forced to eat snow.  Some owls eat snake, moles, and lizards.  Some owls are forced to eat leafs and twigs.  Some owls eat the leaves off of trees.  Some owls eat the bark off a tree.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

   

 

Chapter 3

 

What Owls Do

 

An owlÕs lunch coughed up is called a pellet.  An owl can twist its head backward to help it see.  The owl claws its prey with its sharp talons.  Owls can shriek, bark, and sing.  To clean itself it is called preening, when the owl cleans itself it uses oil from its bottom, it helps to make them waterproof.  Baby owls cannot fly, but they can sit on branches witch is called preaching.  The mother sits on the owlets to keep them warm.  In a year a snowy owl can lay 14 eggs.  It can take weeks for the eggs to hatch.  An owl can fly very quietly through the trees.  The snowy owl is awake in the daytime.  A female owl lays, round white eggs.  A baby owl is leaves the nest at 2-3.  An adult owl finds mates in the spring.  An owl can hear very well.  Wings help the owl fly and hunt.  They have special wings to help them be quiet when hunting.  To help them hunt owls also use their hearing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chapter 4

 

What Owls Look Like

 

Great horned owls are usually dark brown.  A pie shaped face helps the owl.  The barn owl has golden, gray, white, and tan feathers.  The northern spotted owl has golden, dark brown, and white feathers.  An eagle owl has pink-ish-red eyelids.  The burrowing owl has very long legs.  The burrowing owl has white, brown, and golden feathers.  The barn owl has a hart shaped face.  Owls have soft feathers.  The snowy owl has white feathers with black and brown spots.  Some owls have white feathers with brown spots.  Some owls have very light brown feathers.  The snowy owl has white feathers to blend in with the snow.  Great horned owls have feathers shaped like horns.  Thick long talons help the owl.  Owl babies are born covered in soft, fluffy feathers.
